Today, on what would have been her birthday, we remember MC Trouble (LaTasha Sheron Rogers)—a pioneering voice whose impact on hip-hop continues to be felt decades after her passing. Born on July 30, 1970, MC Trouble made history as the first female rapper signed to Motown Records, opening doors during an era when women in hip-hop were still fighting for recognition.

Her 1990 debut album, Gotta Get a Grip, showcased an artist with lyrical confidence, undeniable charisma, and the ability to move effortlessly between hard-hitting rhymes and radio-ready records. Songs like ”(I Wanna) Make You Mine” introduced audiences to a young MC whose career seemed destined for greatness.

Tragically, that promise was cut short when MC Trouble passed away in 1991 at just 20 years old following an epileptic seizure. Though her time in the spotlight was brief, her influence endured. Fellow artists paid tribute to her legacy, and her groundbreaking role as Motown’s first female rapper remains an important chapter in hip-hop history.

On her birthday, we celebrate not only the music she left behind but the barriers she broke and the inspiration she continues to provide for generations of women in hip-hop.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, MC Trouble. Your voice, your legacy, and your contribution to the culture will never be forgotten.
