Spike Lee Brings a New Film Celebration Home to Brooklyn 🎬

Spike Lee has spent decades making Brooklyn more than a backdrop. Through his lens, the borough has become a character, a cultural force and an unmistakable part of American cinema.

Now, Lee is helping bring something new to the community that has been so closely connected to his work.

Playback: The Brooklyn Watch Party is set to debut November 6–7, 2026 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). The new two-day film and cultural festival brings together Lee, Clara Wu Tsai and filmmaker/producer Nicholas Ma for a celebration of Brooklyn’s filmmakers, artists, storytellers and communities.

The inaugural event is expected to feature film screenings, conversations with influential creatives, special activations and a free street fair. The weekend will also bring one of Lee’s defining Brooklyn stories back to the screen with a special presentation of Crooklyn, featuring Lee, Alfre Woodard and additional guests.

What makes this particularly interesting is the idea behind it.

This isn’t simply another place to screen movies. Playback is being positioned as a communal experience — bringing people together through film while recognizing Brooklyn’s enormous contribution to art and culture.

For independent filmmakers, musicians, producers and creatives, there’s something worth paying attention to here. The future of independent art isn’t only about creating the work. It’s also about creating the spaces, institutions and communities where that work can live.
